Hephaestus was married to the
goddess Aphrodite. Aphrodite was obsessed with appearances and soon became
embarrassed by Hephaestus. When Hephaestus would leave to travel, Aphrodite
would cheat on him with Ares. Ares is the god of war and Hephaestus’s own brother.
When Hephaestus realized that Aphrodite had cheated on him, he set up a trap.
He trapped Aphrodite and Ares. After their trapping, he invited the other gods
and goddess to witness what has been going on. Many of these Olympians were
impressed with Hephaestus’s work.
Once, when Hera and Zeus were fighting,
Hephaestus became involved very quickly. They were fighting about Zeus
cheating, which was their main topic for quarreling, seeing that Zeus cheated on
his wife many times. Hephaestus sided with Hera, but this was a terrible
mistake because Zeus was the most powerful of all of the gods. Zeus, being
angry, seized Hephaestus and threw him off of Mount Olympus. Hephaestus was the
only god that has ever been thrown off of Mount Olympus. When he was thrown off
the second time, there were not any sea goddesses there to catch him so, he
fell to the ground. He became even more injured than he was before. Generally,
gods and goddesses were viewed as very beautiful and divine figures. Hephaestus
is the only god that is not viewed as such a perfect god.
Hephaestus was very good at making
beautiful creations. Throughout his
immortal life, he had been thrown off the home of the gods, Mount Olympus, not
once, but twice. This made him extremely injured, but still left him with his
rare godlike talent. Not many other immortals had a gift as rare as Hephaestus’s
gift of creation. His great uncles, the Cyclopes, did have this gift of metal working
too. Instead of using their talent they guarded Cronus in the underworld.
