Metis is one of the most
intelligent goddesses of the Greek world. She was the most intelligent of the
Greek gods, until her daughter Athena was born. She is a shape shifter. This
means that she can take any form of any object. She has tricked many gods and
goddesses with this gift. Her gift is also the reason that Zeus was able to
swallow her. He probably wouldn’t have been able to swallow Metis unless she
had been able to change her shape. Metis is the cousin of Zeus and the other
children of Cronus. This includes Hades, Poseidon, Hera, Hestia, and Demeter. She
is the first wife of the Olympian ruler, Zeus.
Unlike her husband, she is a Titan.
Zeus was faced with a dilemma when he received a prophecy. This prophecy told
Zeus that out of his future children, one would be at equal power, and the
other would overthrow Zeus and take the crown. Metis was pregnant with Zeus’s
two children and like his father, he swallowed his wife. He pretended he was
fascinated with her ability to shape shift, and he told her to transform into
something small. Before she realized what was happening, he snatched her and
swallowed her. This prevented Zeus from being overthrown. Zeus was faced with a
headache, and he told someone to crack open his skull with an axe. They obliged
and because Zeus is a god, he could not be killed. When he struck Zeus with the
axe, Athena protruded from his skull. She was born dressed in armor and fully
grown. Athena is the goddess of wisdom and daughter of Zeus and Metis.
Metis is also known for helping the
Olympians take over Mount Olympus. She was the one who poisoned Cronus to make
him regurgitate his children. With her intelligence, she deceived Cronus and is
responsible for the Olympian win against the Titans.
