In Greek Mythology, the god of
metal working is Hephaestus. Hephaestus is the son of Hera. Hera is Zeus’s wife
and being as arrogant as she is, she believed that she could have a child even
better than Zeus’s child, Athena. She wanted to achieve her goal of defeating
Zeus because Zeus often cheated on Hera, making her angry and extremely
jealous. Hera wanted to have a child by herself because Athena was born out of
Zeus’s skull. Athena is a very powerful goddess, making Hera upset because she
is the daughter of Zeus and Metis, the Titan goddess of wisdom.
Hephaestus was born with disabilities
and Hera, embarrassed by her imperfect son, threw Hephaestus off of Mount
Olympus. Hephaestus is the only god that has been thrown off of Mount Olympus.
He was disposed of by his mother when he was an infant. He was caught by two sea
gods and taken to a cave at the bottom of the ocean. He was taken care of for
nine years in the cave. He learned kindness from the two female goddesses and
soon his personality reflected theirs. His caretakers provided him with a
multitude of objects to make beautiful creations with. He was very gifted, and
soon enough he created golden sandals for all of the Olympian gods, except
for his mother, Hera. He was taken to Mount Olympus and presented the gods with
their gifts. He presented his mother with a golden throne, and when she sat
down, it trapped her. Invisible ropes prevented her from leaving the chair
because Hephaestus wanted to be recognized. He wouldn’t release his mother from
the throne unless she recognized him as her son. She swore on the River Styx
about Hephaestus being her son. This river prevented promises to be broken or
there would be consequences.
